Equilibrium : The Balance Between Order and Chaos

Juan Guillermo Restrepo Sanz is a painter and sculptor.

His recent paintings can be divided into two categories. The first focuses on details from miniature illustrations in medieval illuminated manuscripts, enlarging this fine and subtle artwork into large-scale abstract decorative designs on canvas. Using vivid, contrasting colors, the designs become undulating images––new compositions unto themselves. The second type of painting focuses on ingredients and color, using the canvas as the location of controlled, luminous accidents.

Born in Colombia, Juan earned his Masters in Visual Arts and Museography from the Instituto Departamental de Bellas Artes in Cali.

He lives and works in Jersey City, NJ.
