Encaustic (Wax) Painting

Encaustic is the name for both a wax painting and a painting process involving heat to apply and fuse the medium. The name encaustic comes from the greek enkaustikos which means “to heat” or “to burn”. Heat is used throughout the encaustic painting process to layer and melt the wax elements onto the canvas.

In this class you will guided on the use a handheld heat gun to melt colored waxes through a variety of techniques. Your final composition can be self-directed or provided for you by the instructor.

Suminagashi Painting

Suminagashi (sue-me-NAH-gah-she) comes from the Japanese words “sumi” meaning ink and “nagashi” meaning floating. The ancient form of Japanese marbling dates back over 800 years. Colored inks are floated on a bath of clear water and then gently manipulated into delicate and serendipitous patterns, unlike Western traditions of paper marbling with many more ingredients and standardized patterns. Paper is carefully laid on top of the water to absorb the colors and then lifted.

This is a form of mono-printing where no two prints will be exactly the same.

3D Modeling

Saturdays / 4:00pm - 5:45pm

Cost: $49

This workshop is intended for those with little or no 3D modeling or SketchUp experience and are interested in discovering how this program can be used to enhance their capabilities. You will learn the elements of the workspace, how to quickly and accurately generate and develop 3D models, and how to use and import furniture and lighting from 3D warehouse (the world’s largest online library of 3D models) to complete their projects precisely and expediently.

While other 3D modeling programs (Rhino, Max, Maya) are used primarily for complex special effects seen in movies, SketchUp provides a more intuitive interface that enables a streamlined process for turning your ideas into an easier to understand and recognizable three-dimensional model.

After completing this workshop, you will have the skills to build models for personal projects and to enhance client presentations, joining the new wave of 3D designers.

Recommended: The workshop will be presented live and projected in HD but having a laptop with SketchUp installed and following along will provide the most comprehensive understanding of the program. SketchUp offers a free 30-day trial which can be downloaded at https://www.sketchup.com/download
